How to strike with power!

How hard can you hit? good question, but how do you hit hard while moving back or sideways or even when your being attacked, power can come in many forms, poison comes in little bottles as I was once told.

One of things we will look at is the Force = Mass x Acceleration example which is one of the most overused terms by martial arts instructors and one of the most understood, unless you know about general physics you might believe this to be right but in fact the main ingredient is timing with out that it doesn’t matter how fast or heavy you are if you don’t hit the target its useless, the other is accuracy depending on your discipline, for this blog we are going to talk about KickBoxing and MMA.
When a Kick boxer hits an opponent the aim is to knock them out, by making their opponent’s head accelerate rapidly, the opponent’s head decelerates rapidly because it is attached via muscles to the neck. The brain has inertia (it keeps moving), and collides with the inside of the skull causing trauma, dysfunction, and perhaps permanent damage. This could be achieved by a punch or a kick, the knockout is not caused by the acceleration of the brain, It is caused by the collision of the brain with the inside of the skull, the thing to remember is that this is one way to achieve the knockout, another would be to not move the head as much but to create a shock wave effect into the centre of the brain with a technique such as a kick or elbow. A really good subject to research would be momentum and impulse. 
This seminar will also cover how to wind your opponent and weaken them before you try to knock them out, most people try to hit the head first and go for the win straight away, sports fighting is a purley tactical affair with two opponents like a chess game, fitness and stamina will play a part but if you know how to slow them down and weaken the arms so they drop things can become a lot safer and easier in the fight.
MSD Evolution will be holding a how to strike with power seminar at the full time academy in Bishops Cleeve, not only will this be a striking session to improve your striking capability it will cover many other techniques on how to stop your opponent.

See you on the mat!

ISKA Kickboxing Common Wealth title for Warbrick

Andree Warbrick brings the ISKA commonwealth kickboxing title back to Cheltenham in a 10 round battle and puts her self in line for a world title shot in November.

Warbrick of MSD Evolution Cheltenham beat Katie Sendall of GMA Extreme Gloucester by a unanimous decision.

In a thrilling fight Warbrick displayed kickboxing and tactical skills to wow the crowd and impress the judges.

Andree’s coach Mike Bennett said, “It had been a year since the two girls last fought and we had totally changed our game plan on how to fight Katie, she is a tough girl with lots of experience and we knew we had to bring a new game to the table”

And this new game was very clear to see as Warbrick handled Sendall with strength, movement and timing not allowing her opponent to use the power that she has, time after time Sendall got caught with a perfectly timed front kick to the mid section and picked off with punches as she drove forward.

Warbrick will now prepare to bring the world title back to Cheltenham as she starts her training straight away but will have to fly out to Ireland in November to compete in that bout.

Mike Bennett also commented “Both these girls are inspirational and a credit to the sport, cutting weight and training several hours every day takes dedication and commitment”

Kickboxing and mma footwork

Footwork tactics

This blog is based on a Kickboxing / MMA stand up.

Have you ever sparred and thought “I should be picking you off, stand still” well if you have you need to be looking at how to control your opponent, depending on his or her height and whether you need to sit in the pocket (range between a kick and a punch) will dictate how you try and move your opponent to set them up.

Try and control the centre of the ring (which is tricky if you don’t have a fulltime academy) is what you tend to here from instructors, but what you actually need to do is control the direction that your back faces, by that I mean make sure your back is always aiming towards the middle of the ring, you don’t need to stand in the middle.

Your sparring will have major faults if you do not practice the following:

1. Shadowing

2. Slide

3. Drawing

4. Pocket

5. Stalking

6. Pushing

7. Fakeing

8. Tempting

9. Closing

10. Opening

All of the above are footwork tactics for stand up martial arts.

MSD Evolution will be having a seminar in the near future and all of the above tactics will be explained, drilled, practiced and used in a sparring format.

If you are interested in footwork tactics and would like to attend this seminar please contact us on the email below.

Little Tiger Cubs

The Little Tiger Cubs training programme roars into Cheltenham

A NEW fun training programme for three to five-year-old sweeping the country has arrived in Cheltenham.

The Cubs’ system is unique and differs from other children’s training programmes as it is not activity specific.

This means it can be utilised by many education, art and sports bodies as part of their normal activity.

The programme is a combination of common exercises and fun games, which can be blended with specific skills from each parent activity.

The aim is that each kid will develop core motor skills and increased fitness through play, while developing specific skills relevant to the activity they have enrolled for.

Mike Bennett said: “The Little Tiger Cubs system of combining education and skills with fun manages to balance what the young children want to do, which is play, and what their parent’s want, which is for their children to learn skills.

“Having a great training system, great coaches and a network of clubs available is not enough. “The financial cost to the parents must be affordable. We looked at other organizations offering their own programmes, which we viewed to be expensive, with large start up fees, hidden costs and substantial monthly fees.

“The incredible growth and expansion of our Little Tiger Cubs network is evidence that a fun and educational activity at an affordable price is what the parents are looking for.”

The local clubs are based at Bishops Cleeve, Hatherley, Wymans Brook and Charlton Kings.

All have a limited number of spaces available and to reserve a free trial lesson call 07919 282 151.
